Mitigating Factors For Rodgers
I've been reading Liverpool fans' thoughts on Brendan Rodgers, which are becoming increasingly hostile, and I'm genuinely interested to know what their stance is in relation to last season's second place finish. Clearly Liverpool are underperforming this year (although the resurgence of Man U and Arsenal getting Sanchez clearly hasn't helped), but what is it that makes you think this year shows the "real" Brendan, and that he won't, next season, produce a near repeat of last season's heroics? (unlikely to finish 2nd, as I don't know how he can be expected to compete with Chelsea, Man U and Man City, but it's not out of the realms of possibility that they'll strongly challenge for the top 3).
I suppose you'll say "Suarez", which in one respect is fair enough, but in others, not really. He had the benefit of one of the best players in the world on top form, but actually, Suarez never played like that for Dalglish, so does Brendan not deserve some credit for Suarez's form? What about Henderson, Sturridge and 2nd-half-of-season Mignolet?
I think it's always difficult to tell how good a manager is, unless they produce season after season of brilliance, such as Fergie and Mourinho, but I think there have to be mitigating factors for Liverpool's season. Losing Suarez is always going to be a massive blow, just as it was for Spurs losing Bale. We did then sack AVB, but Spurs' performances under AVB were an absolute abomination, whereas at times, Liverpool have looked brilliant, and things have seemed to click for them. Is it not worth giving Rodgers the chance to see if he can get that happening more regularly next season, having had a year to absorb Suarez's loss, and for his new signings to bed in? Everyone's going mad for Klopp, but he, like Brendan, is coming off the back of a bad season, having had quite a good one the year before.
I'm not trying to troll or anything like that, I'm just genuinely quite intrigued to know what has convinced fans that he is a dud, when obviously no one was saying that last season.

Replace Rodgers? Why?...
There's a great deal of "Rodgers out" campaigners making noise today. That's quite understandable as being a Liverpool fan has not been too much fun over the last few weeks.
My question is, even if Klopp or a "big big manager" were to come to the club, what exactly do you believe would happen? Maybe I'm missing something but the summers transfer business is not likely to improve. I don't believe that Liverpool would pay significantly more for a manager then immediately smash their carefully laid wage structure. Even if wages of over £100k per week become common place, how many world greats will be clamouring to come and play at Anfield? Sales of Ballotelli, Borini etc will not raise huge sums. FSG will invest but there's literally a zero percent chance of players like Reus, Vidal, Pedro coming anywhere near Liverpool.
Also, new managers tend to need time to settle in. Yet another transitional season. Are Liverpool's performances all so dire that we can see no hope? Absolutely not. When the side is confident and playing well Liverpool look more than capable of challenging for the top four. The problem Rodgers faces is the squad's inability to bounce back into form after a bad result. This is a part of the squads coaching which must be addressed (quickly) but is not a reason to forget the good performances we've seen this season.
Next year might not be our year, but there's every chance it'll be an improvement. A lot hinges on the transfer window...oh

Dave The Save, 'Local' Hero
I'm disconcerted about the increasing number of articles suggesting that De Gea will leave Old Trafford at the end of the season because I think he's been our best player this year by some margin. He's also the best all-round goalkeeper in the Premiership. He's arguably the best shot-stopper I've ever seen and may well be acknowledged as the best goalie in the world in the next few years, as he matures. If you disagree, so be it.
If your readers are anything like me, they may well remember consistent Mailers like Smith MUFC, Chris ITFC, Jack of several ages and theydon but they'll forget infrequent contributors like me. As I do myself. So I'm simply trying to prod your readers' memories of my mail of about 2 weeks back in which I said I thought I was the first Mailbox contributor to recognise De Gea's skills when watching him in under-21 European finals games. I said I hoped United's recruiters were watching him and, lo and behold, there he was playing for us shortly after. And, after a bit of a rough start where he got some heavy criticism for the poor way he dealt with high crosses, he's really grown into the role and has become one of United's most valuable players. And, let's face it, even if we sold him for a substantial fee, who would we replace him with?
And so it now appears David might want to go back to sunny Spain. Fair enough, I've been there myself and love both the country and its people. De Gea is probably thinking of sitting at an outside table at a fashionable café and re-developing his tan. But, surely, someone at United can take him to an equally fashionable café in Manchester (yeah, right) and introduce him to the soothing noises of Manchester raindrops on the canvas top of the sun umbrella? Surely someone can take him to a Christmas panto where there are two silly, grown men under a bull's outfit doing stupid stuff? Surely that would resolve his homesickness?
What's not to like, David?
I will be devastated if De Gea leaves United. And, yes, I'm aware Spurs, Liverpool, Arsenal and fans of other teams can well write in on star players leaving their own teams. As they do. So we're all in the same boat when it comes to our better players leaving and we can either curse them for evermore or wish them well.
In De Gea's case, I have to wish him well IF the rumours are true. I'm extremely proud that he has been associated with United and I hope that, IF he does leave for Real, that he speaks well of Manchester (the city) and United and encourages restless teammates to go to United, even if he has to give away his raincoat and rain hat.
