Port Vale pick up Purkiss Port Vale manager Rob Page has signed former Walsall defender Ben Purkiss on a two-year deal.

Port Vale manager Rob Page has signed former Walsall defender Ben Purkiss on a two-year deal. The 31-year-old joins Vale on a free transfer after his contract with the Saddlers expired at the end of last season. Page moved for Purkiss after Freddie Veseli failed to accept his offer of a new contract by the club's June 10 deadline. He will compete with Adam Yates for a place in the team next season. He made 39 appearances for the Saddlers last season, including the Johnstone's Paint Trophy final defeat at Wembley against Bristol City. The full-back has previously played for York, Oxford, Darlington and Hereford.

Liverpool right to buy early in summer, says Peter Taylor

Liverpool’s “buy early” policy will stand them in good stead for the 2015/16 Premier League season, says Peter Taylor. Brendan Rodgers’ side announced the £21.3million signing of Brazilian forward Roberto Firmino on Wednesday from Hoffenheim, having already captured James Milner, Danny Ings, Joe Gomez and Adam Bogdan this summer. The Reds have moved quickly to bolster their squad after last season's disappointing campaign and Sky Sports pundit and former England Under-21 manager Taylor says the early rush is an advantage to the Reds. Money No Comfort For Wasted Talent

Meat Feast I know it is hard to have sympathy for Premier League footballers. They have lifestyles which many of us can only ever dream of, with wealth and lifestyle which are utterly aspirational for most young men. However, and the reason I am writing, is that footballers are becoming nothing but a commodity. They are just meat to be traded. Chelsea see their young signings as future earnings, they either succeed and they win trophies, or they fail, and they are sold for inflated prices. City see them as something to help them meet criteria to keep on trading. You could say that is all we all are, in our jobs, but there is a brutal binary nature to it when it comes to footballers. Sure, these young men are handsomely rewarded, but often they are blinded by the money. Greedy agents tell them it is a good idea, that they are the next Zidane, and so the players go. They aren't told this is a short term gain. Yet, they are young, and with the game becoming more and more about results, and less about play, if they fail, they are immediately chastised, told they aren't good enough. Most managers need results immediately. Jose Mourinho is a winner, and he is this because he is ruthless. He wouldn't allow any youth player near that first team if they weren't 100% ready. When they do get there, unless they can perform game after game, they are out and will be replaced with a world class individual. Sure, the young player has got an amazing education, and will probably still have the opportunity to make a career elsewhere, but often this has resulted in a stagnated career. I am not ragging on Chelsea, I think they have their aims, and they will reach them how they see fit. I just worry that there are lots of players out there who probably could have gone on to be lights of Europe, but who haven't because they signed for clubs like Arsenal, or United or Chelsea. Now, after countless loan spells, they are released, or sold to clubs lower down in the pecking order. Sure they have their money, but they'll more than likely not make the splash they could have done. Now rumours are that City are going to turn their attentions to Jack Wilshere (again in the hope to meet 'home grown' criteria), after Liverpool rebuffed their overtures for Sterling. Surely all Arsene Wenger needs to do is sit Jack down and say, 'You know Jack Rodwell and Scott Sinclair...they were spoken about in raptured tones, and look at their careers now'. It is kind of sad that City spent £200 million on their academy, went around the world hoovering up the best players, and still can't produce any 'home grown' talent. In fact, they probably are good, but they are now 'too big' to blood youth players, and let them learn from failure. The stakes are too high. So this summer, when we read stories about young players being snapped up, and silly money being bid on players, while you eat your Pret sandwich and drink your pop, wishing it was you. Don't be too hard on yourself, we're all just meat in the end. John Matrix AFC

Can Jack Learn Enough On An IPad?

He's convinced England boss Roy Hodgson and, perhaps most importantly, convinced himself. But if Jack Wilshere is to really make his new position work then he must persuade his club manager. Unfortunately, Arsene Wenger remains reluctant to acquiesce to the idea of the 23-year-old as a holding midfielder. The Arsenal boss said in October that he did not envisage Wilshere playing there and has been true to his word in the limited opportunities to test the theory since then. The ankle injury that kept the Gunners midfielder out over the winter has meant only three starts for Wilshere since his back-to-back man-of-the-match performances for England in November. The following week against Manchester United, Wenger positioned him as a No10 with two midfielders operating behind and when Wilshere returned to the starting line-up in May, it was to play out wide, cutting inside from the right flank. "He is not a ball-winner," said Wenger late last year in response to the calls for him to give Wilshere his chance as a deep-lying midfielder. "I believe he is more a guy who you want to get close to the final third. To keep him deep you take a big part of his efficiency away. He is a guy who likes to penetrate when there is many people, he can provoke free-kicks, he can create openings. It would be detrimental to his strengths in a position that is not his strength." Perhaps Wenger is right about Wilshere's ball-winning abilities, although he has certainly shown himself to be an enthusiastic tackler and appears more than willing to embrace the challenge of improving that aspect of his game. Wilshere made four tackles in the 3-2 win over Slovenia on Sunday - more than any England team-mate - and his tally of four interceptions was more than anyone else on the pitch. Moreover, to equate a deep-lying role with that of a ball-winner might be to misunderstand how Wilshere plots to interpret the task. It's evident from his own research that the player has something rather different in mind. It's the likes of Xabi Alonso and Andrea Pirlo that he looks to for inspiration. "I get the clips through on my iPad," he said last year. "The analyst guys here send them to me and they highlight some of his key points, his key strengths. That's part and parcel of learning." After playing there for the first time against Switzerland in September, he added: "There is a lot more to come from me in that position, but the more I watch players like that, the quicker I will learn. I have been watching Xabi Alonso on video in the past couple of weeks. He had a record number of passes in one game, nearly 200 in one match, which is ridiculous. Watching players like him and Andrea Pirlo, you learn how clever they are, how intelligent they are on the ball." Alonso and Pirlo are well known for the creative spark they can provide a team courtesy of their long passing, but Wilshere is not an obvious fit for that skill-set. It's his dribbling skills that are more apparent and if he's to continue showing that kind of fearlessness it requires support from those around him. After a series of encouraging displays for his country, the signs are that Hodgson is keen to construct the England team around him to that end.

Mata calls on De Gea to stay

De Gea has just one year left on his contract at Old Trafford and the Spanish goalkeeper has been strongly linked with a move back to Spain with Real Madrid said to be leading the chase. Speaking to Spanish newspaper Marca, Mata said: "Lots of people ask me about him. He's a friend and I want him to be happy. "He's currently one of the best goalkeepers in the world. From a selfish point of view, I would want to have him in my team." Former Barcelona keeper Victor Valdes is already at Old Trafford but Louis van Gaal is rumoured to be lining up a replacement for De Gea with Tottenham keeper Hugo Lloris, Atletico Madrid's Jan Oblak and Ajax's Jasper Cillessen all heavily linked. Mata also took time to praise former manager Rafael Benitez who he claims brought the best football out of him when he played under the Spaniard at Chelsea. He said: "I had him at Chelsea and we won the Europa League. It was a great campaign, my best in terms of statistics. Benítez knows how to get the most out of every player and get them performing to their best."

United facing Cillessen battle Ajax keeper Jasper Cillessen has hinted that Man Utd are interesting in signing him, but has admitted the Dutch club are desperate to block any proposed move.

The 26-year-old Holland keeper is believed to be United's number one target to replace David De Gea if the Spain stopper heads off, as expected, to Real Madrid. United have been linked with Tottenham's Hugo Lloris and Atletico Madrid's Jan Oblak but goalkeeping coach Frans Hoek has prioritised a move for Cillessen, who featured in the Holland World Cup squad under Louis van Gaal. However, Cillessen reckons Ajax will do everything in their power to stop him moving to Old Trafford. "The Ajax management are going to make it really difficult when the interest becomes concrete," Cillessen told the Sunday Mirror. "If I had planned to leave, I would not have signed a new contract until 2018. My old contract was expiring in the summer of 2016 and in that case this summer would have been the perfect moment to leave. "[Ajax coach] Frank de Boer has been very clear when he received questions about my transfer - he wants to block it." German giants Bayern Munich are also now believed to be tracking Cillessen, who would command a fee close to £20million. Cillessen added: "Since the World Cup in Brazil the whole world has changed for me. It says something about my status that I am now linked to such big clubs. "I can't walk in public anymore. I can't sit in a restaurant without being asked for photos and autographs."

The Page That Started Early Doors

Sub Sells U21s Down The River Mediawatch can't help thinking the Mirror Sport sub has 'done a job' on England's Under-21s, giving the Young Lions a taste of the future. Perched underneath a headline that reads 'Kane's Pain' and has no real relevance to the Tottenham striker other than he was part of the side that lost last night to Portugal, the sub-headline goes on: 'England's kids lose for FIFTH straight game in Euro finals despite Harry, Ings and Co...they now haven't won for SIX YEARS'. Simon Bird does rediscover the context in his report, which concedes 'it was only the second defeat in 18 games of Southgate's reign...' The emphasis on 'FIFTH' and 'SIX YEARS' is the eye catcher. But considering there are only three players remaining in the squad who featured in the three defeats at the last finals in 2013 - Jack Butland, Nathan Redmond and Nathaniel Chalobah - it's churlish at best to lump previous woes with Southgate's current crop. Southgate was not the boss back then, so it's certainly harsh to attribute those three defeats as well as the final group defeat in 2011 to the current squad, who were undone 1-0 by a Portugal team who have been described as potentially the country's next 'golden generation'. Unlike the England side fielded by Southgate, Rui Jorge was able to put out a side packed with senior international and Champions League experience. 'Where are Ross Barkley, Sterling and Shaw et al?', Mediawatch hears you cry. Well after 24 minutes in the bore draw with Ireland and no action against Slovenia, Barkley is on the p*** in Ibiza, Sterling has been 'caught' doing nothing illegal and Shaw is "trying to get fit".

In Defence Of Wayne Rooney

Is it REALLY that hard to see that actually he has done pretty bloody good?? I never said he was the greatest player ever if you take away Ronaldo and Messi. I said he has few equals. If you then throw into the equation that I cant remember many of the other players playing in midfield for long stretches of time or that he hasn't played in a substantially worse league (Holland/France/Italy) I am pretty sure my point stands. The 2004 hype around him was too big at the time but if you had asked Wayne whether in 10 yrs he would be in the position he is in now, I am almost certain he would be more than happy with what he has achieved Regards, Tyler Coate Rooney Anything But Inconsistent I cant believe this is still debated. Many people let their personal views on him affect their judgement of him and his career, united fans included. If I offered you an 18 year old striker now who could bring you a goal every other game for a decade, and nearly as many assists, who would score in every round of the champions league, who would end his career as his nations and clubs all time top goal scorers, probably second all time in the prem, who currently sits 4th in assists since records began, has every club trophy except fa cup and so on. You would think this was roy of the rovers stuff, but cos he looks like a potato and can get rather aggressive on the pitch, as he is a sore loser like most winners (Mourinho, Ferguson for example), he is disparaged. If he had played for your team, you would love him for his passion, his hard work, his ability at times to take over a game on his own (Yes this has happened countless times when he is on his top form) and his desire to win. You can call him inconsistent, but one in two over a whole career is anything but that and he provides more than just goal scoring. Utd fans who have turned on him, i get it, its a money issue, a lack of respect for the club you might say at a push. Anyway, as for his England appearances lately, he missed the end of the season through injury, hadnt played in like 6 or 7 weeks maybe? How long does golden boy Jack Wilshire take to find his form after yet another injury? Give him a break, he will qualify england with his goals again, as he has done for most of the last few tournaments. Then he just has to be fit at the start of the tournament for a change. Anyway, blah, haters will still hate. But history will be much kinder to him.

The Page That Will Go For The Usual

Villan Of The Piece So, Mediawatch assumes that we all know what Jack Grealish was allegedly up to while on holiday in Tenerife recently? Predictably, the number of high horses in the country has multiplied beyond belief in the aftermath, including over at BBC Sport. 'Sports stars behaving badly: Have they lost touch with reality?' is the beautifully oblivious headline from chief sports writer Tom Fordyce. 'Out of control, out of touch. Spoiled by success, intoxicated by money' is the opening line to a piece detailing how the images, allegedly of Aston Villa's Grealish, are symptomatic of sportspeople 'losing touch with reality'. The article continues to run down similar instances, starting with 'occasional smoker of fags' Jack Wilshere initiating anti-Tottenham chants while apparently intoxicated. In what is actually meant to be a defence (of sorts) for Grealish, Fordyce states that 'none of this is particularly new - it's here where where we begin to take a rather ridiculous turn. The next 'sports star behaving badly' is Manu Tuilagi, who lost his place in England's rugby World Cup squad after assaulting two female police officers. Among the rest are the three Leicester players allegedly appearing in a racist sex tape and tennis player Vitas Gerulaitis, 'a habitual cocaine user' at the top of his game. Now, Mediawatch isn't saying that the alleged actions of Grealish are fine. As a footballer he is a role model, after all. However, as a 19-year-old, he is simply enjoying himself. Jumping from those antics to Wilshere's is one thing, but referencing a) a man who has assaulted two police officers and b) three players embroiled in controversy over a racist sex tape is a very big jump. It's a piece where, as aforementioned, Fordyce is defending Grealish, albeit in the most deliberately roundabout way possible. One second he says that the midfielder is 'simply reflecting' reality (in an article titled 'Sports stars behaving badly: Have they lost touch with reality?', remember), and the next he's likening it to assaulting two police officers and to three players allegedly appearing in a racist sex tape. 'Be upset. Be disappointed. But do not be shocked', is the final line to the article. Frankly, we aren't.

League Cup first round ties that catch the eye

The League Cup provides a chance for clubs outside the Premier League to have their moment in the spotlight, and it is an opportunity many have taken in recent seasons. Who could forget Bradford City reaching the final as a League Two club in 2013? Or League One side Sheffield United narrowly losing to Tottenham at the semi-final stage last term? Or Will Grigg inspiring MK Dons to a 4-0 hammering of Manchester United? Those chances for glory will await the 36 clubs that make it through their first-round matches in August. Local rivalries, mammoth journeys and divided family loyalties - BBC Sport looks at some key fixtures in round one. Accrington Stanley v Hull City Dean Windass Accrington Stanley midfielder Josh Windass, son of former Hull striker Dean, is set to face the club where his father is now an ambassador. Josh, 21, told BBC Radio Lancashire: "It's obviously a great draw for me and the club. Hopefully they'll bring a lot of fans down so there will be big revenue for the club as well. "I think my dad will be supporting them to win, but will want me to do well I think."

Radamel Falcao: Can he succeed at Chelsea after Man Utd struggles?

Pepe Reina has hinted he could be on his way out of Bayern Munich this summer after revealing his desire for more first-team football next term. The 32-year-old played second fiddle to Manuel Neuer, managing only three appearances in 2014-15, and he will face further competition for places after Bayern snapped up Sven Ulreich from Stuttgart on Tuesday. And now Reina has placed doubt over his future at the Bundesliga giants after admitting he wants to play more next term. He told Marca Plus: “It’s been a harder year than I expected. You can accept being understudy in the national team, but it’s more difficult to accept it at a big club. “I hoped to play more, but I haven’t felt deceived because I knew what I was letting myself in for. I have a contract with Bayern, although the plan is to play more football next season.”

Guillem Balague's La Liga XI for 2014/15... who joins Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo?

The end of the La Liga season is upon us, and we have been blessed with a tense title race, some glittering new arrivals and a fierce top four battle. Champions League: Jamie Redknapp picks his best XI

People talk about Juventus’ good defence but to have a good defence you need to have a good goalkeeper. A couple of years ago I thought maybe he was over the hill but he’s come back and is in the form of his life right now. He’s been instrumental in getting them to the final. No ‘keeper has kept more clean sheets in the competition this season than him (six), and he also has the best save percentage of the top shot-stoppers (81.58 per cent). Right-back – Dani Alves, Barcelona Dani Alves: 'Most attacking right-back ever' Dani Alves: 'Most attacking right-back ever' People like Alves change how positions are perceived. He was an outside right/right-winger many years ago and he’s turned himself into probably the most attacking right-back the world has ever seen. He’s fantastic at getting forward, has an eye for goal and a tremendous understanding with Lionel Messi down the right. He might not be the absolute best defensively – we might find out more about that aspect of his game when he leaves Barca – but he’s perfect for the way Barcelona play. Only Messi has made more assists than him in the Champions League this season, which perfectly shows his attacking contributions. Centre-back – Giorgio Chiellini, Juventus Giorgio Chiellini: 'A warrior' Giorgio Chiellini: 'A warrior' Chiellini may not be the easiest on the eye but he’s a warrior and, in terms of his will to win and desire, you can’t fault him. He gets in the team on his bravery and he’s the sort of guy you want in your side. There have been outstanding performances this season from the likes of John Terry, Gerard Pique and Javier Mascherano, but I find it difficult to pick two better centre-backs than Chiellini and Diego Godin – who have each recorded six clean sheets this season.

England boss Roy Hodgson proud of England's unbeaten record

We’re especially proud because these games have come in June. They are traditionally not the best of games for players to concentrate and put all thoughts of a long season out of their minds and to really focus with their England hats on. “If anything, that’s the most satisfying thing for me. I selected 24 players and got 24. Each and every training session was top quality and they had top work ethics. “Then to come out on the field and go a goal behind but still show the character and the team spirit to come back again, they’re the type of things we hope going forward will make us a better team. “We’ve got a year to work on our play so that come next summer we’re an even better team than we are today.” Jack Wilshere played an instrumental part in England’s victory scoring two stunning second-half goals but Hodgson was impressed with the Arsenal midfielder's overall display. “We’re delighted for him," said Hodgson. Adam Lallana said Roy Hodgson told his England side to keep calm and be patient at half time Adam Lallana said Roy Hodgson told his England side to keep calm and be patient at half time “I was just pleased with Jack’s general play, especially in the second half when he took control of the game. But to blast two unstoppable shots from outside the box past a goalkeeper of Handanovic’s quality was good. “That will be good for Jack.” Hodgson also was full of praise for England captain Wayne Rooney after he went level with Gary Lineker in England’s all-time goalscoring chart on 48. “He worked unbelievably hard,” the England boss said. “His target play was excellent. He held the ball up well. He competed well and he worked unbelievably hard defensively.

Sol Campbell to run for London Mayor

Sol Campbell - hoping for victory in London Mayoral race Former England footballer Sol Campbell has announced his bid to run for London Mayor, accusing "pro" politicians of failing and saying his working-class background would help him. Campbell's name has long been in the running to be a Conservative candidate for the job but now he has officially confirmed his intentions. The ex-Arsenal and Spurs player will take part in a hustings event with rivals to become the Tory candidate who will challenge for the job that will be vacated by Boris Johnson in next May. INTERNATIONAL FRIENDLIES - Today FinlandvEstonia Finland4/7 Draw13/5 Estonia5/1 CORRECT SCORE - Today FinlandvEstonia 1-04/10-111/12-05/11-220/12-115/20-233/1Bet now Campbell said: "I'm going in with my eyes wide open. I know I'm not going to be a frontrunner. "But I look at people who have been in politics for five, 10, 15 years, and muck up, you see them muck up and think 'You guys are supposed to be pro!' "People that have gone to Oxbridge, had thousands spent on their education, and I mean they are royally mucking up." He told The Sun: "I bring something new to the table. This is a whole new road for me, something I can get my teeth into, but I just felt it was something I had to do. "I come from a working-class background, it wasn't easy for me at all, but I worked hard. And now it's about giving something back." The Conservative Way Forward group confirmed Campbell would take part in its mayoral hustings next month. A Conservative Way Forward spokesman said: "We are delighted that candidates like Sol Campbell are throwing their hat in the ring, and coming to debate the future of London at our hustings on 4 July. It's decision time. The starting gun has been fired. Other candidates now need to decide: are they in or out?" Campbell will be going up against financial entrepreneur Ivan Massow, current deputy mayor Stephen Greenhalgh and London Assembly member Andrew Boff. There have also been suggestions Zac Goldsmith, the MP for Richmond who increased his majority by more than four times in May, might challenge to become Conservative candidate.

Martin Tyler's FA Cup stats: Omens for Arsenal v Aston Villa

n his regular stats column, Sky Sports commentator Martin Tyler looks at the FA Cup's losers, winners and record-breakers. How to send your questions to Martin:Frank Lampard is the best goal-scoring midfielder ever, says Jamie RedknappFrank Lampard will end his Premier League career as the best goal-scoring midfielder of all-time, says Jamie Redknapp. We’re going to lose two Premier League legends this weekend – and, after Steven Gerrard’s big Anfield send-off last Saturday, it’s only right Frank Lampard gets the plaudits he deserves ahead of his final game before moving to the MLS. It’s strange that match will come in the blue of Manchester City rather than the blue of Chelsea – his decision to play one final season for them after leaving Stamford Bridge last year surprised everybody. But, nonetheless, he’ll sign off as the best goal-scoring midfielder the Premier League has ever seen.

David Moyes exclusive: Real Sociedad boss in it for the long term

In an exclusive interview with Sky Sports, David Moyes talks to Pete Hall about his first season in Spain, local politics, buying British, beating Barcelona and why he’s in it for the long term at Real Sociedad. On the beautiful Bay of Biscay they like to do things a little differently. San Sebastian, one of the main cities on that beautiful stretch of north-east Spanish coast, is proud of its Basque heritage and that fiercely independent way of life is an integral part of the inner workings that define the city’s football team. INTERNATIONAL FRIENDLIES - Today FinlandvEstonia Finland8/13 Draw13/5 Estonia4/1 CORRECT SCORE - Today FinlandvEstonia 1-04/10-111/12-011/21-218/12-115/20-228/1Bet now Real Sociedad’s coaches are encouraged to blood as many graduates from the club’s famous Zubieta academy as possible, and try not to populate the squad with too many non-Basque recruits. When recruiting managers, on the other hand, La Real don’t have to adhere to such traditions, with several other British coaches having already tried to steer the club to glory. The latest is David Moyes, who has just finished his first campaign in La Liga, where, after taking over in November with the club in the relegation zone, he has steered them to a respectable 12th in his first season coaching overseas. Instant popularity Speaking exclusively to Sky Sports, the former Manchester United boss revealed that he has been made to feel at home from the start, with his roots key to his instant popularity. “One of the biggest questions I got asked when I moved there was ‘how are you voting?’ (regarding Scottish independence), as they want to be independent themselves,” Moyes said.

Di Maria: I'm staying at United

The Argentina international joined United for a British transfer record fee of £59.7 million from Real Madrid last summer. However, he struggled to make an impression in his debut season and did not start a Premier League match after March 4. That led to reports that he could already be heading for the exit door, with Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain rumoured to be interested in securing his services. But Di Maria, who is with Argentina ahead of the Copa America, says he has no plans to leave Old Trafford and is looking forward to improving under Louis van Gaal next season. “I have just finished my first season playing for Manchester United," he told The Sun. "It was a hard season for me. I think it was hard because it was another country and another league, and this league is harder than the Spanish one. So, I couldn't adapt myself as I wanted to. "Now I will play the Copa America and then I will move back to Manchester for next season and do my best there."
