Wimmer seals Spurs move

Sky sources understand a deal for the 22-year-old was finalised last month, and Spurs have now confirmed his arrival on a five-year contract.
An Austria international, centre-half Wimmer helped Cologne win promotion to the Bundesliga in his first season in Germany and was a regular this term as they finished in mid-table.
Wimmer is Spurs' first close-season signing, but Sky sources understand a £12m bid is being prepared for Burnley striker Danny Ings.
He told Cologne's website: "Tottenham is a huge chance for me. Nonetheless, it won't be easy saying good bye to Cologne.
"I experienced wonderful moments here, such as the promotion and the Klassenerhalt (staying up).
"I want to thank the training staff, my team-mates, and all those involved in the club for their extraordinary support.
"Cologne and its fantastic fans will always remain something special for me."
Cologne general manager Jorg Schmadtke added: "Kevin has improved tremendously during his time here and has developed into an Austria international player.
"Of course it is with some regret that he will be leaving us, but we understand that he is getting the opportunity to play for one of the biggest traditional clubs in London.
"In our dealings with Tottenham we were able to reach an agreement that all parties were happy with."

Gutierrez Provides Newcastle's Happy Glow

After a campaign of misery, Newcastle's season ended in the most magical fashion for most supporters' favourite player. Jonas is an adopted Geordie. Gutierrez's story is well-told, but bears repeating. In September 2014, the Argentinean revealed that he had been receiving treatment for testicular cancer. He had noticed a lump after a collision with Bacary Sagna against Arsenal in May 2013. After an operation to remove the tumour, he received further chemotherapy following a swelling of his lymph nodes. It was not until November 3 last year that he was discharged from hospital, and began the long road back to full fitness. The first-team return came in March. Gutierrez says that he will never forgive Newcastle for the way he was treated after returning from his illness, with Alan Pardew informing him he was not wanted by the club. It is reported that they also refused to pay his medical bills. Yet it was Gutierrez who put those differences to one side when it mattered most. If there was one Newcastle player to lift the gloom, it had to be him. Gutierrez's cross assisted Moussa Sissoko for the opening goal, and then a scuffed shot sealed the home side's victory and Premier League survival. He ripped off his shirt and celebrated like he has never celebrated before; a stadium went crazy. Having had his own life saved, Gutierrez became Newcastle's own saviour. It was his first goal since his cancer battle had been won. "I know this could be my last game at St James's Park," he said after the game. "Since I have recovered from my illness, I have always said the same thing. I want to help the team and work hard. I've been improving all the weeks since I arrived. I feel stronger and feel I can play 90 minutes. Two months ago, I didn't know I was going to be able to play. "We have to do it for the fans and the city, because they don't deserve to be in this situation," Gutierrez continued. "We are the players, and we have to take responsibility. It's always our responsibility. We are the players that are on the pitch. We have to do it for the fans and the city." I wrote this when Gutierrez returned to the Newcastle side, but even that happy ending has been surpassed. That is the way to truly beat cancer. Fight back, grow stronger and achieve personal greatness. Jonas Gutierrez was already a cult hero at Newcastle. He has now become one of the city's favourite sons.

Radamel Falcao: Manchester United decide not to sign striker

Manchester United have decided not to keep Radamel Falcao following the end of his season-long loan from Monaco. The Colombian, who missed Sunday's 0-0 draw with Hull because of injury, scored just four goals in 29 matches. United did not take up a reported £43.2m option to buy the 29-year-old, who failed to net in his last 13 games. "Falcao is a top professional and a good human being. I would like to wish him well for the future," Van Gaal told the club's website. The former Porto and Atletico Madrid striker's last goal came against Leicester on 31 January. The South American, who missed the 2014 World Cup after suffering a serious knee injury in January last year, made a point of waving to the United fans when he was substituted in the 1-1 draw with Arsenal on 17 May, in what proved to be his last appearance. It is the first decision in what is expected to be a busy summer for Van Gaal, who will look to reshape a squad he has consistently said is not balanced. Falcao factfile Club Appearances Goals River Plate (2004-09) 90 34 Porto (2009-11) 72 62 Atletico Madrid (2011-13) 86 68 Monaco (2013-14) 20 11 Manchester United (2014-15) 29 4 And while the 63-year-old is ready to go on an extended holiday to Portugal, after spending most of last summer guiding the Netherlands to third place at the World Cup, he intends to remain in touch with executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward. "I am the manager," he said. "I have to decide which players are to go and which have to come. That is a process. It is not so easy. It is waiting for clubs to agree or not. "It is hard work, but more for Ed Woodward than me. I go on holiday but I will always be in contact." There was no update on the future of goalkeeper David de Gea, who missed the Hull game after failing to recover from a hamstring injury. "He has to say something, not I," said Van Gaal when asked about the Spaniard.

Premier League: Sunderland's Dick Advocaat weeps tears of joy

Dick Advocaat - the veteran hard man of management known as "The Little General" - was reduced to tears as Sunderland sealed survival in the Premier League. The 67-year-old Dutchman was pushed over the edge of emotion by the sight of his long-time assistant Bert van Lingen in a similarly reduced state after the Black Cats secured the point they needed to stay up with a goalless draw at Arsenal. Advocaat had nine games to save Sunderland from relegation when he replaced Gus Poyet after the Uruguayan was sacked by owner Ellis Short following the 4-0 home defeat at Aston Villa on 14 March. The fact Advocaat achieved safety with a fixture to spare is another achievement on the CV of one of the game's most widely travelled and experienced managers - and gives Sunderland the chance to rebuild after their latest great escape. The Advocaat effect The sight of Advocaat tearfully falling into the arms of his old friend and colleague Van Lingen in front of thousands of joyous Sunderland fans at Emirates Stadium showed how much keeping up Sunderland meant to him - and how much it has taken out of him. Advocaat looked drained and delighted in equal measure in his post-match briefing, admitting it was the first time football had ever moved him to public tears. Managing Sunderland has always had the capacity to reduce grown men to tears but it was a still a surprise to see a battle-hardened character renowned for occasionally employing the iron fist in an iron glove in such a condition. He was hailed in a slightly X-rated song by Sunderland's supporters after the final whistle and he deserves huge credit for the manner in which he turned around a club and a team that looked locked on course for the Championship when he arrived on Wearside. Sunderland fans Sunderland fans have been through the emotional mill this season Poyet left a Sunderland side devoid of spirit, easily beaten and prone to the sort of spectacular collapse that proved the final straw against Villa. Advocaat's appointment was a gamble on the part of owner Short and the manager himself. He had no Premier League experience, although he had worked in the Scottish Premier League with Rangers between 1998 and 2002. He opened with defeat at West Ham United but followed that up with the perfect tonic for any Sunderland manager - victory against Newcastle United in the Wear-Tyne derby. How vital does that win look now with Sunderland safe and Newcastle fighting it out with Hull City to avoid relegation on the season's final day? There have been bumps in the road, such as the 4-1 home defeat by Crystal Palace, but otherwise Advocaat has concentrated on injecting steel where there was previously a soft centre. Crucial wins at home to Southampton and away at Everton demonstrated that Advocaat's ability to organise, a tactical acumen accumulated over a long career, and a belief in players who had lost their way was giving Sunderland a chance. Even Jermain Defoe, a striker who has forged a reputation as an expert penalty box predator, showed his willingness to be flexible under Advocaat, operating on the right at Everton then switching to the left at Arsenal.

Williams Should Be Ashamed Of Europa View There are strong words for Ashley Williams in the Mailbox, which contains a fine submission on middle class security and the Europa League. We love you guys...

Loving Being A United Fan Never has being a United fan been so much fun. As amazing as Sir Alex was, it did get to be a familiar story every season. Start with good, exciting football, grind out results through the winter and then ruthlessly win games for the last couple of months. I haven't enjoyed our football this much since the days of Ronaldo in his prime. We've got totally different aspects of football in our team these days, with little Spanish playmakers, Chris Smalling driving out of defence and a 'false winger'. We play expansive, possession based football and it really feels like I'm looking forward to games more than ever. Granted, we've come fourth but in terms of entertainment and new ideas, I've loved it. Never before have we been so exciting in the transfer market, either. Again, Ferguson made hugely effective signings, but rarely did we sign such high calibre players. Mata, Di Maria, Herrera, Shaw and now Depay. In contrast, Sir Alex didn't sign another centre midfielder after Hargreaves and Anderson in 2007. For every van Persie, there was an uninspiring Bebe, Diouf or Buttner to balance it out. Not a dig at Fergie, as I'm sure he was very restricted, but it's nice to be excited about the transfer window for a change. Finally, the personalities in the club appear to be a bit more interesting. David Gill was quiet and effective, whereas Ed Woodward is now a meme. We've got Rooney singing at Christmas, Ander Herrera stealing hearts, Daley Blind's face, Mata being an angel and a manager who chants his own name and drinks far too much red wine. We may well be winning, but it's a lot of fun. Calum (get Rafael back in and I'll explode), Stoke Mandeville Ballsy: Strip Williams Of The Captaincy I know you probably have a ridiculous amount of mails about the Europa League and I don't care if this gets printed or not I just need to vent! If I was a Swansea fan I would be fuming at Ashley Williams. With this attitude why bother winning a domestic cup? It's just another hindrance on completing your goal of finishing mid table. Excuse me Mr Williams but you are paid a lot of money to play football and fans are paying a lot of money to watch you collect your wages and keep them safely in midtable....thanking you of course for making sure they never have to worry about any highs or lows just plain old 3pm Saturday footie. If Clubs and players think this way then why not cut the Europa spot given to the League Cup. Top teams don't take this as seriously as other trophies so just remove them from it too and let all the average small minded footballers play each other for a trophy that won't have them worrying about possibly playing for a trophy that is a great honour to win. Bren MUFC Dublin Possible Sarcasm On De Gea Don't book your one way plane tickets to Madrid just yet, David! I have more reasons to stay. 1. I have a really big poster of you on my wall. 2. You are my favouritest player. 3. Your beard looks really soft. 4. Manchester United is the best. 5. Real Madrid are really nasty. They stole Ronaldo, too :'( 6. Manchester United is the best. Paul, Glasgow Middle Class Security And The Europa In trying to understand clubs aversion to the Europa League it may be best to look at a one of the key economic trends over the last couple of decades which has been the erosion of job security amongst the middle class and the simultaneous growth of the middle class as the working class shrinks.

Alex Neil: The New Breed Of Scottish Manager

When Aston Villa sacked manager Paul Lambert in mid-February, Premier League history was made. Not only did it provide Tim Sherwood with his first permanent post in football management, but it marked the first time since its inception that the Premier League did not play host to a Scottish boss. On Monday, the man who has finally restored positivity at Norwich City has every chance of rectifying that. It is too soon to bunch Alex Neil in with Sir Alex Ferguson, David Moyes and his fellow esteemed compatriots right now but, at just 33, the rise of Scottish football's new hybrid manager is on a crash course for English football's top table. His immediate fate will be decided in a yin and yang Championship play-off final on Monday. Free-flowing Norwich face the defensive machine that is Middlesbrough, while Neil, who learnt his trade as a player-manager in the Scottish Championship, will go head-to-head with Jose Mourinho's protege Aitor Karanka. The paths of the two bosses could not be more opposite. More than 300 La Liga games in a 14-year career provided the platform for Karanka's coaching life, and he spent three years under the wing of Mourinho as his Real Madrid assistant. Appointed at Boro at the beginning of last season, it's easy to see the influence of the Chelsea boss in the Spaniard's playing style. For Neil, it has been a long and arduous journey. A Barnsley and Mansfield alumni, he joined Hamilton in 2005 as a tough-tackling midfielder. In what would soon become symptomatic of Neil's straightforward style, he boiled his abilities down to the following frank assessment: "I wasn't the most mobile but I could read the game and pass the ball." Having been made Mansfield captain at just 23, Neil had always carried a degree of weight on his shoulders as a player. "If somebody wasn't pulling their weight I was quite happy to say what I needed to say," he once said of his responsibilities when wearing the armband. However, it was back-to-back hip injuries while at Hamilton that instigated an unlikely beginning in the world of coaching. Leaving him sidelined for six months in 2009 and 2010, the midfielder spent his time coaching Hamilton's Under 17s while still in his 20s. "Billy [Reid, then manager] said to me, 'Do a bit of coaching' and it just snowballed. Then I took over [as manager] so the continuity was there", said Neil of his rapid ascension to the Accies hotseat. It was a transition that was typically seamless. He was appointed player-manager aged just 31 in May 2013. A year later, Hamilton secured promotion back to Scottish football's top tier, beating Hibernian in the play-offs. The Scottish Premiership was just another stepping stone. A loss to Inverness on the opening day was a blow, but not once did Neil let Hamilton's confidence waiver. Victories over Celtic and Aberdeen helped build an unbeaten run comprising of the following 11 games as the promoted side topped the table by mid-October. Despite his and Hamilton's remarkable form, it remained a significant gamble for Norwich to come calling by the turn of the year. Then in seventh, Neil Adams was struggling to keep the Canaries afloat in what many had expected to be a close promotion battle. Clubs taking a risk on inexperienced bosses a la David Moyes at Preston had become rare, but Norwich took the plunge and appointed Neil by January. Then 11 points adrift of Championship leaders Bournemouth, 10 away from bitter rivals Ipswich and out of the play-off places, Neil has performed another magic act. Fast forward four months and they finished the season eight points clear of Ipswich and just four behind champions Bournemouth. Those bare facts oversimplify his achievements. In the 24 games before Neil's arrival, Norwich held the eighth best defensive record, with 29 conceded. In 20 games in charge, his side had the meanest defence with just 16 goals against. Forty-four goals scored in the preceding games, 38 under Neil. Ten wins turned into 13, seven defeats into three. Back in Scotland, Hamilton went 13 games without a win after Neil's departure, including four straight defeats in the games immediately following his exit. So was Norwich's transformation down to the hard work which has come to personify Scottish managers in the past? Captain Russell Martin said his boss "leaves no stone unturned" in the quest for perfection, while keeper John Ruddy rates him as "the best I've ever seen" in terms of attention to detail. In Neil's own words though, it isn't quite as simple as 'hard work = results'. For a manager who has trialled six formations in half a season at Carrow Road, there is a clear tactical understanding. Neil can play just as well to his opponent's deficiencies as his own team's strengths. "I'm adaptable in terms of shape and how we play," Neil says. "Whatever I think it will take to win the game, I am more than happy to do. Whether it's change personnel, change shape, whatever." That became clear in his first game as boss, a 2-1 win with ten men from behind against leaders Bournemouth, and the clarity remains crystal heading into the biggest game of his life. Comparison to Moyes and Lambert are inevitable given the rise from the lower leagues and the Scottish common denominator, but it's one Neil readily refutes. "I am my own man," is the general riposte, and given his early displays of tactical fluidity and understanding of the game, it's hard to argue. He still has less than 100 games under his belt as a manager.

Judge Clears Barca To Seal Title Win

Thursday ended up not being much better for Real Madrid than Wednesday. After they were bundled out of the Champions League by a Juventus team reigniting the club's phobia of Italian sides, it was announced that the final two rounds of action in La Liga would be played out after all. So no skulking off into the summer with a sick note saying that Madrid did not have to complete the season and face one more home match against the fans, due to an institutional verruca. Even before a judge declared that the Players Union strike planned for the weekend was illegal and needed to be withdrawn, the Spanish League and footballers were in talks about a deal to avoid the almighty mess of an incomplete campaign. Indeed, that decision was doubly worse for Madrid as the repercussions of a substantial stoppage might have reduced by half the amount of 'where did it all go wrong?' and 'who's to blame?' at the Santiago Bernabéu. Aside from poor Gareth Bale, of course. 'The disaster of the century,' was the declaration from Marca on Thursday, with the paper happily ignoring various other Champions League mishaps over the past 12 years or so. As it stands, the Champions League title chase is now officially over for Madrid, and La Liga could be too on Sunday if Barcelona beat Atlético Madrid in the Vicente Calderón. However, that is a fairly hefty 'if'. The Rojiblancos are by no means secure in third with Valencia four points behind with six to play for. And there is perhaps a chance that Barca might be a little relaxed with all the talk in the Catalan capital of whether a treble is on the cards despite everything being still to play for. A loss to Atleti, and a victory for Real Madrid at Espanyol, could see a single point difference on the final day with Barca facing a relegation-threatened Deportivo at the Camp Nou. That will certainly be the message from Luis Enrique as he looks to focus his footballers away from fanciful title talk in the papers. Valencia have to look in two directions at the same time - upwards in the event of a loss for Atlético, and also downwards with Sevilla three points adrift in fifth and steaming ahead in a bid to show off completely by qualifying for the Champions League both by finishing fourth and by winning the Europa League for the second year in succession. Villarreal are fixed into sixth, leaving a scramble for what would become one European spot below, should Barcelona win the Copa del Rey and leave the gap vacant. Málaga, Athletic Bilbao and Espanyol are the teams currently in prime position to challenge of seventh, and where the feeling in England is ABEL - Anything But the Europa League - Spanish sides actively enjoy the experience of pretty much doubling the size of their seasons. Sevilla certainly thrive on that, anyway. Down at the bottom, Córdoba are already relegated and their end to the season could well resemble the final scenes of The Commitments in terms of inter-group fisticuffs. Poor old Eibar are second from bottom on 31 points and are lost and disconsolate as the club couldn't even buy a win. Especially because that kind of business is now very much frowned upon by the authorities after decades of the most ludicrously dodgy relegation 'battles'. Granada, currently occupying the third relegation spot also on 31 points, looked sunk a few weeks ago. But a desperate change of coach from the gloomy, disciplinarian Abel Resino to the bouncy José Ramón Sandoval - one of the pillars of the current Rayo Vallecano success story - seems to have done the trick with back-to-back wins under his stewardship. Deportivo are also in grave danger of returning to La Segunda, especially with the treat of a final match in the Camp Nou. This makes their home game with Levante an absolute whopper of a clash that will spell out the team's destiny for the next few years. With a fairly decent chance of a Spanish double in Europe this season, it is still a crying shame that the country's domestic league was only actually completed after the say-so of a judge. What could La Liga's sides achieve if its administrators were of the calibre of its players?

James Milner On A Free' Is No Joke 'James Milner on a free' is already the punchline of the summer. Apparently it's embarrassing to sign an excellent player with two Premier League medals...

When you search on Twitter for 'James Milner Liverpool'... 'Liverpool will be linked with Pjanic, Hummels, Isco, Messi, Pele, Jesus, Jay Gatsby and John Lennon and end up signing Milner on a free.' 'Mancs are spending £30m on a squad player. Meanwhile Liverpool are trying to replace their best ever play SG with James Milner on a free.' 'Anyway I'm sure Liverpool fans will be buzzing when the club confirm James Milner has joined the club on a free. Memphis who?' 'James Milner on a free' is already the punchline of the summer; signing an England international midfielder with over 50 caps and two Premier League titles is clearly a booby prize. And 'on a free' too - which bizarrely makes it an even more embarrassing transfer. Would Liverpool be less of a laughing stock if they were paying £10m for a talented, experienced, versatile, dedicated footballer with an impeccable attitude? What's worse - getting last season's designer clothes a) at full, exorbitant price b) at a discount from TK Maxx or c) as a free gift? Liverpool fans were seemingly unembarrassed to pay £25m for Adam Lallana and £20m for Dejan Lovren last summer and yet paying nothing for Milner is dismissed by many as an unsavoury symptom of Liverpool's limited ambitions. For every LOL-tastic comment from a Manchester United fan and re-tweet-greedy 'joke' from a bookmakers' social media editor, there is an outburst of self-loathing from a Liverpool supporter already writing off next season by spitting out 'James Milner on a free'. But here's the real punchline: Getting James Milner on a free transfer would be an absolutely brilliant piece of business from Liverpool. It could be the Premier League transfer of the summer. Manuel Pellegrini is oft derided by journalists for never knowingly saying anything remotely quotable but this is the Chilean being atypically effusive: "Milner's a phenomenon, a guy with big balls and a heart this big. "Find me a more complete English player. There are players who're better technically, yes. Quicker players, yes. Players who head better, yes. But show me one who does all the things Milner does well. There isn't one." That is a Premier League-winning manager talking about a footballer he desperately wants to keep at Manchester City, a club with the means and ambition if not the mentality to dominate Europe. Pellegrini admitted to being "left with this feeling of injustice" every time he chooses Samir Nasri or Jesus Navas ahead of Milner, who has astonishingly played over 650 games for club and country at the age of just 29; at least 600 of those performances were worth a 7 or 8/10. And yet Milner is somehow not dynamic enough to play for a Liverpool side who have just finished fifth and desperately need players with exemplary decision-making and reliability to complement the exuberance and unreliability of youth. It may not be sexy to talk about consistency but nobody outside porn believes that large testicles are sexy. Looking at the statistics over 90 minutes, Milner has created fewer chances than his City colleagues Navas, David Silva and Nasri, but his record of 2.5 key passes is way ahead of anything Liverpool players have offered this season. Raheem Sterling (2.2), Steven Gerrard (2.1), Jordan Henderson (1.9) and Philippe Coutinho (1.8) are statistically less creative than Milner. He also makes almost three times as many tackles as Yaya Toure and significantly more than Henderson. Despite starting only 16 Premier League games this season, Milner's assists total (6) still matches Nasri and bizarrely beats Silva; he is behind only Sterling and Henderson from Liverpool's squad.

Pep: Messi best of all time Bayern Munich boss Pep Guardiola described Lionel Messi as the "best of all time" and backed Barcelona to win a fifth Champions League title after knocking his side out at the semi-final stage.

The Bundesliga champions suffered a 5-3 aggregate defeat despite winning 3-2 at the Allianz Arena to bow out of the competition in the last four for the second straight season. Neymar did the damage on German soil in the second leg with a two-goal cameo but it was Lionel Messi’s double at the Nou Camp which set the La Liga leaders on their way to the final in Berlin next month. Guardiola believes the Argentina international has recaptured his best form and described him as the best ever. "He is back, he is there where I had the privilege to train him,” Guardiola said. "He is definitely back to his best. “He is the best player of all time, I compare him with Pele. “I am so happy to see this football." Bayern will end the season with just the Bundesliga title after exiting the German Cup and the Champions League at the semi-final stage but Guardiola praised his players - and admitted he hoped his old club would finish the job. "I am very proud of my players," Guardiola added. "We did everything we could. It's a pity. I hope we can play better next season. I now want to celebrate our Championship before planning for next season." “Congratulations to Barcelona also, I hope they win their fifth Champions League final in Berlin." Meanwhile, Bayern skipper Philipp Lahm believes his side’s chances of reaching the final were lost after their 3-0 defeat at the Nou Camp in the first leg a week ago. "We believed in the miracle, but we couldn't make it happen," Lahm said. "It's impossible to stop those players for the whole 90 minutes. We didn't lose it today, but in the first leg."

Keeping De Gea Is United's Main Summer Task Manchester United's main task is to keep their best player, but it is Tim Sherwood who tops the winners. We have less kind words for QPR and poor Steve Bruce...

After months of mockery over Tim Sherwood's media persona and solipsism (and I'm guilty too), he's doing an excellent job at keeping Aston Villa in the Premier League. Sherwood labelled the 1-0 victory over West Ham as a "big step" towards safety, but I can take that further. Villa are safe. Before Manchester City's result against QPR, a Premier League table calculated since the beginning of March saw Villa sitting in fifth position, and no side had scored more goals in that time. Both of those facts were negated by City's 6-0 victory, but the point still stands: Sherwood has transformed Villa. Extrapolating his current record over the course of this season would put Villa in ninth, and he has also reached the FA Cup final. There are caveats to his success, of course. Being the man to take over from the dour Paul Lambert was one of the most attractive jobs imaginable. Villa were in 18th place, but the quality of their squad belied that low standing. From such a funk the only way was up, and Sherwood has led the merry march. Next season will be the biggest test of Sherwood's ability as a manager, the challenge of managing increased expectations. Until now, he is an effective short-term motivational fix, and nothing more. But he has at least earned the chance to prove his credentials. Sherwood's methods are not particularly technical or complicated - he simply aims to make players enjoy playing the game. This is largely achieved by showering them with praise. Take Villa's four best players since Sherwood's arrival, for example: On Christian Benteke: "I don't know if there's a better striker in Europe right now. He's the best." On Tom Cleverley: "He showed the quality he has. He works tirelessly. But he has more than that - he can burst forward." On Jack Grealish: "He could be right up there amongst the best of them." On Fabian Delph: "I don't want to go over the top, but Fabian Delph - there's not a better midfielder in the country at the moment." It doesn't matter if such statements are inaccurate, fanciful or just ludicrously optimistic, just so long as it motivates the players to prove their worth. In Sherwood's defence, all four have done so in the last six weeks. He remains a difficult man to like, but there can be no doubting Sherwood's ability to inspire players through the simple method of making them feel valued. There are still questions to be answered of his aptitude to do so in adversity but, for now, those issues have been pushed to the back of Villa fans' minds. Sherwood's task at Villa Park is far from complete, but after plenty of sarcastic snidery, it would be crass to ignore his positive impact.

David de Gea 'move' to Real Madrid could depend on Iker Casillas, says Graham Hunter

The ball is in Real Madrid's court regarding any potential transfer for Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea, says Graham Hunter. The La Liga side have been linked with the 24-year-old Spaniard over recent months, with his contract expiring at Old Trafford next summer. But Hunter says Real now have to make a decision on the future of current goalkeeper Iker Casillas, who has won five La Liga titles and three Champions League crowns in his 16 years at the Bernabeu. Crystal Palace v Manchester Utd Crystal Palace 7/2 Draw 5/2 Manchester Utd 4/5 Football Betting Bet £5 Get £20 Free Revista De La Liga pundit Hunter said: "My opinion is that Real Madrid want to sign David de Gea but, equally, don't particularly fancy the furore of the Spain No 1 and No 2 either sharing the Liga, Copa Del Rey and Champions League games like Diego Lopez and Casillas did last season. De Gea has excelled for United this campaign De Gea has excelled for United this campaign "They also don't want the constant speculation over whether De Gea and Casillas, if at the same club, work well together, fall out and so on. "If Madrid are determined to prise De Gea away from Manchester United then the ball is definitely back in their court now." De Gea's fine performances for Manchester United since signing from Real's rivals Atletico in 2011 have made him one of the most sought-after goalkeepers in the world. Iker Casillas has equalled Andoni Zubizarreta's record for most wins in La Liga history against Sevilla but did his display silence his critics? But Casillas, Hunter believes, has made his intentions clear about where he sees his future. "Casillas, not for the first time, stated that he couldn't find a better place to play than Real Madrid," Hunter added. "He stated that he fully intended to see out his contract which ends in 2017 and even intimated that he'd stay and fight for his place if he happened not to be first choice during the last two seasons of his deal. "The hard fact is that his preferred choice is to finish his career at Madrid and, in an ideal world, be offered a new contract." Also See: Live transfer blog Latest transfer news Transfer betting
