But the fears that head coach Mauricio Pochettino expressed on Saturday have been realised.
After the game Pochettino said: "We need to assess tomorrow and after tomorrow we will know more. Maybe it's a problem in his ankle ligaments but we hope it is not a big, big issue.

Chadli is likely to miss the north London derby
The Belgium forward has featured 11 times for Spurs this season, scoring one goal; that in their 2-2 draw with Stoke in August.
But he has been added to a lengthy Spurs injury list that contains Heung-Min Son, Nabil Bentaleb, Ryan Mason, Tom Carroll and Alex Pritchard.
The injury lay-off would rule him out of the north London derby against Arsenal at the Emirates on November 8.
The Belgium international has made 90 appearances since arriving from FC Twente in the summer of 2013.

Garry Monk is confident his Swansea players will step up
Garry Monk was left disappointed with Swansea’s 1-0 defeat at home to Stoke on Monday Night Football
Garry Monk is confident his Swansea players will turn their poor form around in the coming weeks after losing to Stoke.
Swansea are now six games without a win in all competitions after Stoke claimed their third successive Premier League victory by defeating the Swans 1-0 at the Liberty Stadium.
Bojan gave the away side the lead from the penalty spot in the third minute after being brought down in the 18-yard box by Swansea captain Ashley Williams.

Gareth Southgate urges Joe Gomez and Jordon Ibe to keep their focus
Klopp replaced the axed Rodgers at Liverpool last week and Southgate believes winger Ibe and defender Gomez must take their chances early.
"I guess they already know that they've got to impress a new manager," he said. "They are both disappointed because somebody who has picked them and given them a chance has gone and I think it's important that players remember that.
"Once they've done that they have to be ready to impress the new manager that comes in because that's the life of a footballer.

Andrew Robertson believes Gordon Strachan is the man to lead Scotland back to the big time
Andrew Robertson believes Gordon Strachan is still the man to lead Scotland
Andrew Robertson believes Gordon Strachan is the man to lead Scotland back to the big time despite their failure to qualify for Euro 2016.
Strachan, who took charge in January 2013, has remained tight-lipped as to his future plans but with his contract now up, he will hold talks with Scottish Football Association chief executive Stewart Regan before deciding his next move.
But Robertson hopes he will shake off the disappointment of failing to book a slot at next summer's European Championships in France and sign up for the task of qualifying for the 2018 World Cup in Russia. The Hull left-back said: "He should stay, one million per cent he should stay. All the boys say that. He's the man to take us forward. He's the man to take us to a championship.

Liverpool's Roberto Firmino withdraws from Brazil squad due to injury
News of Firmino's injury will come as a major concern to Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers, who now looks set to be without their £21.3m summer signing for the upcoming Premier League matches with Aston Villa and Everton.
Firmino, who arrived from German club Hoffenheim, will also miss the Europa League group game with Sion on October 1.
A statement from the Brazilian FA read: "Ricardo Oliveira, the top goalscorer in the Brazilian league with 17 goals, was called up by Brazil coach Dunga.
"The Santos striker will take the place of Liverpool striker Firmino, who was released because of injury."
Firmino has made 7 appearances in all competitions for Liverpool this season but has yet to complete 90 mins or score a goal.

Premier League weekend grades: Ian Holloway gives his verdict
They needed to get the win, and they did. It was a very controversial game, and Jose Mourinho will be happy they are out of it and have won.
The fact that there was an improvement is the key thing. They seemed to gain confidence from their victory in midweek. Jose will probably say that their performance deserved an A, but I am going to take marks off for Diego Costa really stepping over the line. I am sure his manager will deal with him. He has looked a little sad this season, and needs to turn that around.
Chelsea got back to winning ways against Arsenal on Saturday
Chelsea got back to winning ways against Arsenal on Saturday
Arsenal (C-)
Arsene Wenger will be really upset as he'll feel the game was taken away from his side. He will be disappointed with Gabriel's reaction, and he should never have reacted at all. A little back-heel is silly and not even worth it. Cazorla is very hard done by, and on another day he would not have been sent off. The referee didn't need to do it. Ill-discipline hurts your team, and that's why they get this mark.
West Brom (B+)
You have to give West Brom credit. Tony Pulis got it spot on. His decision to play Berahino was a stroke of genius. Once they go one up, they are very difficult to break down, as was proved on Saturday. They held it together well, and looked as solid as a Pulis side always does.
Aston Villa (B-)
I don't blame Aston Villa. They have been better of late, and that is down to Tim Sherwood adding to their belief structure. It is not quite going for them at the moment, but there is signs they have a good, young team.
The cup game against Birmingham will be tough, but a win gives them that belief again. They didn't play that badly on Saturday, and Tony Pulis deserves credit for the win.

Diego Costa: Chelsea's 'serial offender' a vital figure
Diego Costa has made a convincing play to be the Premier League's most divisive figure since his arrival from Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2014 - but rarely has opinion been so split as after his part in Chelsea's 2-0 win against Arsenal at Stamford Bridge.
From the first whistle Costa, typically, was right in the face of Gabriel and Laurent Koscielny and willing to fully engage in the physical and verbal battles.
He did not have a chance worthy of the name but his presence alone is as much a psychological threat as a footballing one even when the force is not with him.
The verdict was reached along predictable lines. Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho praised Costa as his man of the match and likened his spirit and passion for combat to the warriors on show in the Rugby World Cup.
Arsenal counterpart Arsene Wenger accused the 26-year-old of being a serial offender with the knack of escaping punishment, as he did on Saturday after pushing Gunners defender Koscielny in the face before provoking Gabriel into the kick that led to his red card.
And in that one flashpoint, one he somehow walked away from without a red card, he prompted the moment that could almost count as Chelsea's match-winner.
So what makes Costa such a compelling and controversial figure?

West Ham aiming for Europe, according to Dimitri Payet
Tony Pulis is keen to get Saido Berahino back to top form after revealing clear-the-air talks with the rest of the West Brom squad had taken place.
The Baggies boss said Berahino's team-mates took the chance to air their views following his threat to go on strike, and that the saga has since been put to bed.
Berahino made the threat after West Brom rejected two transfer deadline day bids from Tottenham, claiming he would never play for the club again under the stewardship of chairman Jeremy Peace, but he returned to action in the 0-0 draw with Southampton when coming off the bench.Pulis said: "There was a meeting with Saido. I think the players have had full rein, it's not like I've stopped them talking to Saido or pulled him to one side and put him in the corner.
"It wasn't a meeting just about Saido, it was a meeting where Saido was in with the players where things got mentioned.

West Brom 0-1 Aston Villa: Baggies claim points thanks to Saido Berahino
The Baggies are up to 10th in the table but problems are mounting for Villa, who barely had a shot in anger and are just a point and a place above the drop zone.
West Brom made the brighter start and almost led inside three minutes when Chris Brunt sent over a lovely cross from the left and Salomon Rondon nodded it goalwards, only for Brad Guzan to pull off a good reflex save.

Jonny Evans then headed over the crossbar from a Villa corner but the hosts gradually began to improve and Claudio Yacob blocked a Carles Gil effort, after Gabriel Agbonlahor had done well down the left.
But Guzan remained the busier keeper and he had to plunge to his left to keep out a curling effort from Darren Fletcher which was heading for the bottom corner.
And the visitors grabbed the lead five minutes before the break after Craig Dawson was too strong for Jordan Amavi down the right-hand side. The ball broke to James McClean and his cross found its way to Rondon, who teed up Morrison for a shot which Berahino did well to divert past Guzan.

Villa brought big striker Rudy Gestede off the bench at half-time but Rondon was making more of an impact at the other end and Guzan nervously grabbed the ball at the second attempt after the Baggies forward had turned neatly on the edge of the box and unleashed a powerful drive.
Carlos Sanchez had fired over from distance at the other end, and the hosts were then denied a leveller in somewhat controversial fashion with 20 minutes left.
Micah Richards headed into the net after a Jack Grealish cross but referee Martin Atkinson had already blown the whistle for a foul on the Villa youngster.

To add to the misery of the home fans, Ashley Westwood put the subsequent free-kick over the bar and, although the hosts put plenty of crosses into the box in the final 15 minutes, Evans and Gareth McAuley led the way as West Brom defended competently, and in numbers.
Villa finally got a half-chance in stoppage-time when Lenadro Bacuna sent over a good cross from the right and his fellow sub Gestede rose to meet it at the near post but he sent his powerful header over the bar and the home fans began to head for the exits.
West Brom celebrated jubilantly at the final whistle, experienced manager Tony Pulis having masterminded another fine away display, while Villa boss Tim Sherwood was left to wonder how he can get more out of his below-par side.
West Brom manager Tony Pulis told Sky Sports that he believes his team played better that Aston Villa and deserved the three points.

Soccer Saturday verdict - Charlie Nicholas
"I have watched Aston Villa maybe three times this season and I have been encouraged with some of their performances in an attacking sense, Micah Richards was a good signing for them, but today I didn't see any real quality from them. West Brom bossed this from the start.
"Some of them look scared. The quality, the craft, guile was poor. He could have subbed any one of six or seven for me today. It was a very average and tame performance from them. Whereas West Brom, it was a very together, well-drilled, well-organised setup."

League 2 round-up: No change at top as Leyton Orient are held by Wycombe
Ellis Harrison struck from the spot in stoppage time to earn Bristol Rovers a 1-1 draw with Plymouth and prevent the Pilgrims from going top themselves.
Jake Jervis had opened the scoring just five minutes earlier for Argyle at Home Park.
Adam McGurk's equaliser at Oxford kept 10-man Portsmouth in third thanks to a 1-1 draw at the Kassam Stadium after Liam Sercombe had given the U's a first-half lead.
Josh Windass scored two goals in the space of a minute to set Accrington on their way to a 4-2 victory over Exeter City.
Windass (2), Piero Mingoia and Billy Kee put Stanley into a 4-0 lead before the Grecians hit back with late goals from Tom Nichols and Joel Grant.
Ten-man York City came from two goals down to secure a 2-2 draw with Carlisle at Bootham Crescent.
Tom Miller and Troy Archibald-Henville put Carlisle 2-0 up heading into half-time and when Vadaine Oliver was sent off it was looking like a long afternoon for the Minstermen.

Ferguson: Ronaldo had ‘nice vanity’
Sir Alex Ferguson has described Cristiano Ronaldo as a “great, great kid” and a “serious professional” despite his tendency to stand in front of the mirror “loving himself”.
Ferguson – talking to the Daily Telegraph – clearly saw the Portuguese winger’s ego as a positive trait; it has certainly helped him become one of the best players in the world.
“You have to embrace it,” said Ferguson when asked about managing the egos of modern footballers. “Dealing with an ego doesn’t bother me. You used to see [Cristiano] Ronaldo standing in front of the mirror loving himself. But it was a nice vanity.
“The players used to throw jockstraps, boots and all sorts at him. It never bothered him one bit.
“They need to win, these guys: the ones that are cultivating their egos a little bit. You might see a player in a Ferrari and think – what’s he driving that for? But he has to live with that. He’s not going to be driving into town when he’s bottom of the league, or he’s been dropped. Some people can’t judge that. True players can.”

TUNNEL TALK: Sky Sports' Patrick Davison and Davie Provan discuss West Ham's shock win at Man City
Man City's surprise loss to West Ham United at the Etihad "was a good result for Chelsea", according to Sky Sports pundit Davie Provan.
City suffered their first setback in the Premier League this season after going down 2-1 to Slaven Bilic's side on Saturday Night Football.
And Provan thinks that the top-flight leaders - who had gone into the match on the back of a club-record 11-game winning run stretching back to the previous campaign - may have been suffering the after effects of their midweek defeat to Juventus in the Champions League.

Newcastle 1-2 Watford: Hornets schting Schteve
Daryl Janmaat reduced the deficit with a 67th-minute strike, the Magpies’ first goal in 464 minutes of Premier League football, but it was not enough to rescue a point.
Head coach Steve McClaren insisted in the run-up to the game that he was not worried by his new-look side’s start to the season despite their tame surrender at West Ham on Monday evening which saw them slip to the foot of the table.
By the time he headed to the dressing room at half-time, the alarm bells were only being drowned out by the boos echoing around the stadium.
A toxic blend of pitiful defending and powder-puff attacking play allowed Watford to put their energy and commitment to good use as Ighalo and Troy Deeney terrorised Fabricio Coloccini and Chancel Mbemba to leave the Magpies fighting an uphill battle from the off.
The visitors were given a helping hand as their good start became a great one when Newcastle full-back Massadio Haidara gifted possession to wide-man Almen Abdi and saw the Hornets capitalise fully as Deeney and Etienne Capoue combined to feed the ball to Ighalo, who stepped inside Janmaat’s lunge before powering a 10th-minute shot into Tim Krul’s bottom corner.
Newcastle’s response was tepid to say the least, and Watford increased their lead with 28 minutes gone when Deeney’s through-ball split a static home defence and Ighalo ran through to round the stranded Krul and finish.
The Magpies were in dire trouble. They were able to create little with Papiss Cisse appealing for a seventh-minute penalty when he should really have scored amid a goalmouth scramble and Florian Thauvin only just failing to get his head to Moussa Sissoko’s wayward shot.
Their final ball was too often weak and aimless with Thauvin in particular a culprit, although it was the Frenchman who forced keeper Heurelho Gomes into his only real save of the half with a well-struck 39th-minute drive.
McClaren replaced the ineffectual Cisse with Siem de Jong at the break, pushing Ayoze Perez into the middle after a relatively anonymous opening 45 minutes on the left, but while that gave his side a better shape, they struggled to break down a well-organised Hornets’ defence.

Our scoring system has changed this season and a correct result (picking a win, draw or defeat) is now worth 10 points. The exact score earns 40 points.
Last weekend, Lawro got five correct results from 10 Premier League games, including one perfect score.
His score of 80 points saw him beat ex-F1 driver Mark Webber, who picked five correct results with no perfect scores, for a total of 50.
We are keeping a record of the totals for Lawro and his guests (below), and showing a table of how the Premier League would look if all of Lawro's predictions were correct (at the bottom of the page).

John Stones: Everton to reject Chelsea target's transfer request
Everton manager Roberto Martinez says the club will turn down defender John Stones's transfer request.
The England international, 21, asked to leave on Tuesday after the Toffees refused offers of £20m, £26m and £30m from Premier League champions Chelsea.
However, the Blues will reportedly return with a £40m bid before the transfer window closes on Monday.
"Sometimes money can't buy everything and that is going to be a very strong statement at Everton," said Martinez.
"This is not a moment when we can use any money to get us stronger."
Martinez started Stones in Everton's League Cup second-round tie at Barnsley on Wednesday, with the defender playing the whole of their 5-3 extra-time victory.
"John, for a young man under massive pressure, was terrific," added Martinez.
The Spaniard has been angered by Chelsea counterpart Jose Mourinho's public pursuit of Stones and says he trusts Everton chairman Bill Kenwright to stand firm and retain the centre-back.
"We have a chairman who will do the right thing for the club and for the team and, as a true Evertonian, we are clear he will not be easily influenced in taking the money and accepting things which will clearly make our team weaker," he said.
"The situation with John is very clear. We care about him, we will protect him and make sure we give him everything we can to allow him to enjoy his football."

Aston Villa v Man Utd preview: Hosts look for first win in 20 years
Aston Villa host Manchester United on Friday night, looking for a first home win over the Red Devils for 20 years.
Since their 3-1 victory in August 1995, Villa have lost 12 and drawn seven of their 19 Premier League matches against United at Villa Park, and will look to end the hoodoo live on Sky Sports 1.
Both sides won 1-0 on the opening day of the season, albeit in unconvincing fashion. Villa saw off newly-promoted Bournemouth on the south coast, while United overcame Tottenham at Old Trafford thanks to a Kyle Walker own goal.Rudy Gestede may have to settle for a place on Villa's bench against United, despite his debut winner last week. Football League 2015-16: BBC Sport's stories to follow
Just 74 days after Norwich City's Championship play-off final victory at Wembley, the 2015-16 Football League season begins on Friday, when Brighton host Nottingham Forest.
That is the first of 1,671 fixtures to be played across the second, third and fourth tiers this term, and we've picked out some of the key stories to follow over the next 10 months.
Sheringham in at Stevenage
Teddy Sheringham
Ex-England striker Teddy Sheringham retired from playing at the age of 42
Fifteen Football League clubs have appointed new full-time managers since the end of the 2014-15 season.
Some, such as Crawley's Mark Yates or Chesterfield's Dean Saunders, are old hands. Others, such as Marinus Dijkhuizen at Brentford and Carlos Carvalhal at Sheffield Wednesday, will be experiencing English football for the first time.
Former England striker Teddy Sheringham was Stevenage's choice to replace Graham Westley, who left the League Two club in May following their play-off semi-final defeat by Southend.

Sheringham excited by Stevenage job
Vastly experienced and highly decorated as a player, the 49-year-old is starting his managerial career in the quiet surroundings of leafy Hertfordshire.
When ex-Manchester United players decide to have a crack at management, questions about their legendary former boss are almost inevitable.

But Sheringham told BBC Three Counties Radio: "I can't try to be Sir Alex Ferguson. "You only do what you've been taught. I've played for some fantastic managers. I'll take out the best bits of them and use them in my own manner."

MK Dons confirm loan signing of Rob Hall from Bolton
Hall, who also spent time on loan at the club during the 2011/12 season, told MK Dons Player HD. "It was an easy decision, I’m just happy that I’m back here and I can’t wait to get going with the lads again.
"Coming here last year and being given the freedom to go out and play my football revived my whole season. I got on really well with the gaffer and the staff and the lads were great too.
"This was an opportunity I couldn’t turn down, at home playing for a great club like MK Dons."
Dons boss Robinson said: "It was clear for all to see at the back end of last season what Hally is capable of and he’s shown tremendous hunger and desire to want to come here for a third spell. We are more than happy to have him back.
"He’s an exciting young English talent and he’ll add another dimension to our attack."

David de Gea joins new signings on Manchester United pre-season tour
David de Gea has been named in Manchester United's travelling squad for the club's pre-season tour of the United States.
De Gea, who has just one year left on his contract at Old Trafford, has been linked with a move to Real Madrid all summer.
But United, who remain keen to sign De Gea to a new contract, are yet to receive an offer for the goalkeeper and it is understood they are not prepared to sanction a deal unless Sergio Ramos moves the other way.Need cheap professional soccer shoes basketball clothing and other sporting goods , please click

Georgino Wijnaldum to hold Newcastle talks over PSV move
PSV Eindhoven have given attacking midfielder Georgino Wijnaldum permission to talk to Newcastle about a possible move and undergo a medical.
Sky sources report that the clubs have agreed a fee in the region of £14.5m for the Dutch international and the transfer is expected to be ratified at a PSV board meeting on Friday morning.
Wijnaldum has left his hotel in France and is en route to the north-east, and Newcastle are hoping to have him in the travelling party which is heading to the United States for a pre-season tour this weekend. The 24-year-old Wijnaldum captained the PSV team which won the Dutch title last season and has been a long-term Newcastle target.
The former Feyenoord man has been capped 19 times by the Netherlands and was on target in their 3-0 defeat of Brazil in the third place play-off at the World Cup last summer.
Newcastle head coach Steve McClaren knows Wijnaldum well from his two stints in charge of Dutch side FC Twente.

Monk signs new three-year deal with Swansea
Swansea manager Garry Monk has signed a new three-year contract with the club.
Monk, who had two years left on his original deal, has signed a contract which will now see him remain in charge at the Swans until the summer of 2018.
The 36-year-old led Swansea to their highest finish of eighth in the Barclays Premier League last season setting a new club record of 56 points on the way.
Swansea Chairman Huw Jenkins told the club's website: “As a club we are pleased to agree the new contract with Garry.
“It’s deserved reward for the fantastic season we’ve just had and all Garry’s hard work, commitment and loyalty to our football club over many years.
“We also feel it is vital to have stability within our football club, especially with Garry going into such a big season where the reward for remaining within the Barclays Premier League is going to be greater than ever in terms of finance and global exposure.”
Monk, who made 270 appearances for Swansea, took over as manager following the departure of former boss Michael Laudrup in February 2014.

Retired Chelsea footballer Terry Bradbury hits Lotto jackpot
He also went on to play for Leyton Orient, Wrexham and Chester - earning around £25 a week.
Bradbury from Buxton, Derbyshire, said: "The news really is still sinking in. We still can't quite believe it."
Bradbury and his wife Ann usually play the same numbers in the Lotto every week, but they scooped the jackpot after they changed to a Lucky Dip.
Bradbury added: "We just felt like a change so threw two Lucky Dip lines on - and we are so glad we did.
"We will definitely be continuing to play Lotto - and will probably stick with Lucky Dips too."
The couple, who used to run a pub in Tideswell, Derbyshire, bought their ticket from WH Smith in Buxton.

Liverpool right to buy early in summer, says Peter Taylor
Liverpool’s “buy early” policy will stand them in good stead for the 2015/16 Premier League season, says Peter Taylor.
Brendan Rodgers’ side announced the £21.3million signing of Brazilian forward Roberto Firmino on Wednesday from Hoffenheim, having already captured James Milner, Danny Ings, Joe Gomez and Adam Bogdan this summer.
The Reds have moved quickly to bolster their squad after last season's disappointing campaign and Sky Sports pundit and former England Under-21 manager Taylor says the early rush is an advantage to the Reds.

James Milner: Will be a big signing for Liverpool, says Peter Taylor
He said: “Whenever I've had success at clubs, we've got them in early, which means the first day of pre-season everyone is there.
“But you can only do that if you’re sure what you’re going to sign. If you have any doubts you don’t go to early.
“But if you have got the targets, all agreed on the targets and can get them straight away, I think it’s good business to get it done early.

“At that level, if you’re Liverpool, you don’t worry about paying summer wages, it helps you have a good start for the following season.”
Taylor singled out the signing of out-of-contract Manchester City midfielder Milner as the highlight of Liverpool’s summer movements, saying the 29-year-old will bring a professional influence on and off the pitch.
“Milner’s a great lad, you speak to any Under-21 manager, they’ll say he’s the best pro they've ever worked with.
“He can play in a couple of positions for Liverpool, he’ll be there every training session, doing it right every day and every game, and will set an example.”

Money No Comfort For Wasted Talent
Meat Feast
I know it is hard to have sympathy for Premier League footballers. They have lifestyles which many of us can only ever dream of, with wealth and lifestyle which are utterly aspirational for most young men. However, and the reason I am writing, is that footballers are becoming nothing but a commodity. They are just meat to be traded.
Chelsea see their young signings as future earnings, they either succeed and they win trophies, or they fail, and they are sold for inflated prices. City see them as something to help them meet criteria to keep on trading. You could say that is all we all are, in our jobs, but there is a brutal binary nature to it when it comes to footballers. Sure, these young men are handsomely rewarded, but often they are blinded by the money. Greedy agents tell them it is a good idea, that they are the next Zidane, and so the players go. They aren't told this is a short term gain. Yet, they are young, and with the game becoming more and more about results, and less about play, if they fail, they are immediately chastised, told they aren't good enough.
Most managers need results immediately. Jose Mourinho is a winner, and he is this because he is ruthless. He wouldn't allow any youth player near that first team if they weren't 100% ready. When they do get there, unless they can perform game after game, they are out and will be replaced with a world class individual. Sure, the young player has got an amazing education, and will probably still have the opportunity to make a career elsewhere, but often this has resulted in a stagnated career. I am not ragging on Chelsea, I think they have their aims, and they will reach them how they see fit. I just worry that there are lots of players out there who probably could have gone on to be lights of Europe, but who haven't because they signed for clubs like Arsenal, or United or Chelsea. Now, after countless loan spells, they are released, or sold to clubs lower down in the pecking order. Sure they have their money, but they'll more than likely not make the splash they could have done.
Now rumours are that City are going to turn their attentions to Jack Wilshere (again in the hope to meet 'home grown' criteria), after Liverpool rebuffed their overtures for Sterling. Surely all Arsene Wenger needs to do is sit Jack down and say, 'You know Jack Rodwell and Scott Sinclair...they were spoken about in raptured tones, and look at their careers now'. It is kind of sad that City spent £200 million on their academy, went around the world hoovering up the best players, and still can't produce any 'home grown' talent. In fact, they probably are good, but they are now 'too big' to blood youth players, and let them learn from failure. The stakes are too high.
So this summer, when we read stories about young players being snapped up, and silly money being bid on players, while you eat your Pret sandwich and drink your pop, wishing it was you. Don't be too hard on yourself, we're all just meat in the end.

Can Jack Learn Enough On An IPad?
He's convinced England boss Roy Hodgson and, perhaps most importantly, convinced himself. But if Jack Wilshere is to really make his new position work then he must persuade his club manager. Unfortunately, Arsene Wenger remains reluctant to acquiesce to the idea of the 23-year-old as a holding midfielder. The Arsenal boss said in October that he did not envisage Wilshere playing there and has been true to his word in the limited opportunities to test the theory since then.
The ankle injury that kept the Gunners midfielder out over the winter has meant only three starts for Wilshere since his back-to-back man-of-the-match performances for England in November. The following week against Manchester United, Wenger positioned him as a No10 with two midfielders operating behind and when Wilshere returned to the starting line-up in May, it was to play out wide, cutting inside from the right flank.
"He is not a ball-winner," said Wenger late last year in response to the calls for him to give Wilshere his chance as a deep-lying midfielder. "I believe he is more a guy who you want to get close to the final third. To keep him deep you take a big part of his efficiency away. He is a guy who likes to penetrate when there is many people, he can provoke free-kicks, he can create openings. It would be detrimental to his strengths in a position that is not his strength."
Perhaps Wenger is right about Wilshere's ball-winning abilities, although he has certainly shown himself to be an enthusiastic tackler and appears more than willing to embrace the challenge of improving that aspect of his game. Wilshere made four tackles in the 3-2 win over Slovenia on Sunday - more than any England team-mate - and his tally of four interceptions was more than anyone else on the pitch.
Moreover, to equate a deep-lying role with that of a ball-winner might be to misunderstand how Wilshere plots to interpret the task. It's evident from his own research that the player has something rather different in mind. It's the likes of Xabi Alonso and Andrea Pirlo that he looks to for inspiration. "I get the clips through on my iPad," he said last year. "The analyst guys here send them to me and they highlight some of his key points, his key strengths. That's part and parcel of learning."
After playing there for the first time against Switzerland in September, he added: "There is a lot more to come from me in that position, but the more I watch players like that, the quicker I will learn. I have been watching Xabi Alonso on video in the past couple of weeks. He had a record number of passes in one game, nearly 200 in one match, which is ridiculous. Watching players like him and Andrea Pirlo, you learn how clever they are, how intelligent they are on the ball."
Alonso and Pirlo are well known for the creative spark they can provide a team courtesy of their long passing, but Wilshere is not an obvious fit for that skill-set. It's his dribbling skills that are more apparent and if he's to continue showing that kind of fearlessness it requires support from those around him. After a series of encouraging displays for his country, the signs are that Hodgson is keen to construct the England team around him to that end.

Mata calls on De Gea to stay
De Gea has just one year left on his contract at Old Trafford and the Spanish goalkeeper has been strongly linked with a move back to Spain with Real Madrid said to be leading the chase.
Speaking to Spanish newspaper Marca, Mata said: "Lots of people ask me about him. He's a friend and I want him to be happy.
"He's currently one of the best goalkeepers in the world. From a selfish point of view, I would want to have him in my team."
Former Barcelona keeper Victor Valdes is already at Old Trafford but Louis van Gaal is rumoured to be lining up a replacement for De Gea with Tottenham keeper Hugo Lloris, Atletico Madrid's Jan Oblak and Ajax's Jasper Cillessen all heavily linked.
Mata also took time to praise former manager Rafael Benitez who he claims brought the best football out of him when he played under the Spaniard at Chelsea.
He said: "I had him at Chelsea and we won the Europa League. It was a great campaign, my best in terms of statistics. Benítez knows how to get the most out of every player and get them performing to their best."

United facing Cillessen battle Ajax keeper Jasper Cillessen has hinted that Man Utd are interesting in signing him, but has admitted the Dutch club are desperate to block any proposed move.
The 26-year-old Holland keeper is believed to be United's number one target to replace David De Gea if the Spain stopper heads off, as expected, to Real Madrid.
United have been linked with Tottenham's Hugo Lloris and Atletico Madrid's Jan Oblak but goalkeeping coach Frans Hoek has prioritised a move for Cillessen, who featured in the Holland World Cup squad under Louis van Gaal.
However, Cillessen reckons Ajax will do everything in their power to stop him moving to Old Trafford.
"The Ajax management are going to make it really difficult when the interest becomes concrete," Cillessen told the Sunday Mirror.
"If I had planned to leave, I would not have signed a new contract until 2018. My old contract was expiring in the summer of 2016 and in that case this summer would have been the perfect moment to leave.
"[Ajax coach] Frank de Boer has been very clear when he received questions about my transfer - he wants to block it."
German giants Bayern Munich are also now believed to be tracking Cillessen, who would command a fee close to £20million.
Cillessen added: "Since the World Cup in Brazil the whole world has changed for me. It says something about my status that I am now linked to such big clubs.
"I can't walk in public anymore. I can't sit in a restaurant without being asked for photos and autographs."

The Page That Started Early Doors
Sub Sells U21s Down The River
Mediawatch can't help thinking the Mirror Sport sub has 'done a job' on England's Under-21s, giving the Young Lions a taste of the future.
Perched underneath a headline that reads 'Kane's Pain' and has no real relevance to the Tottenham striker other than he was part of the side that lost last night to Portugal, the sub-headline goes on: 'England's kids lose for FIFTH straight game in Euro finals despite Harry, Ings and Co...they now haven't won for SIX YEARS'.
Simon Bird does rediscover the context in his report, which concedes 'it was only the second defeat in 18 games of Southgate's reign...'
The emphasis on 'FIFTH' and 'SIX YEARS' is the eye catcher. But considering there are only three players remaining in the squad who featured in the three defeats at the last finals in 2013 - Jack Butland, Nathan Redmond and Nathaniel Chalobah - it's churlish at best to lump previous woes with Southgate's current crop.
Southgate was not the boss back then, so it's certainly harsh to attribute those three defeats as well as the final group defeat in 2011 to the current squad, who were undone 1-0 by a Portugal team who have been described as potentially the country's next 'golden generation'.
Unlike the England side fielded by Southgate, Rui Jorge was able to put out a side packed with senior international and Champions League experience.
'Where are Ross Barkley, Sterling and Shaw et al?', Mediawatch hears you cry.
Well after 24 minutes in the bore draw with Ireland and no action against Slovenia, Barkley is on the p*** in Ibiza, Sterling has been 'caught' doing nothing illegal and Shaw is "trying to get fit".

In Defence Of Wayne Rooney
Is it REALLY that hard to see that actually he has done pretty bloody good?? I never said he was the greatest player ever if you take away Ronaldo and Messi. I said he has few equals.
If you then throw into the equation that I cant remember many of the other players playing in midfield for long stretches of time or that he hasn't played in a substantially worse league (Holland/France/Italy) I am pretty sure my point stands.
The 2004 hype around him was too big at the time but if you had asked Wayne whether in 10 yrs he would be in the position he is in now, I am almost certain he would be more than happy with what he has achieved
Regards,
Tyler Coate
Rooney Anything But Inconsistent
I cant believe this is still debated. Many people let their personal views on him affect their judgement of him and his career, united fans included.
If I offered you an 18 year old striker now who could bring you a goal every other game for a decade, and nearly as many assists, who would score in every round of the champions league, who would end his career as his nations and clubs all time top goal scorers, probably second all time in the prem, who currently sits 4th in assists since records began, has every club trophy except fa cup and so on.
You would think this was roy of the rovers stuff, but cos he looks like a potato and can get rather aggressive on the pitch, as he is a sore loser like most winners (Mourinho, Ferguson for example), he is disparaged. If he had played for your team, you would love him for his passion, his hard work, his ability at times to take over a game on his own (Yes this has happened countless times when he is on his top form) and his desire to win.
You can call him inconsistent, but one in two over a whole career is anything but that and he provides more than just goal scoring. Utd fans who have turned on him, i get it, its a money issue, a lack of respect for the club you might say at a push.
Anyway, as for his England appearances lately, he missed the end of the season through injury, hadnt played in like 6 or 7 weeks maybe? How long does golden boy Jack Wilshire take to find his form after yet another injury? Give him a break, he will qualify england with his goals again, as he has done for most of the last few tournaments. Then he just has to be fit at the start of the tournament for a change. Anyway, blah, haters will still hate. But history will be much kinder to him.
