James Milner On A Free' Is No Joke 'James Milner on a free' is already the punchline of the summer. Apparently it's embarrassing to sign an excellent player with two Premier League medals...

When you search on Twitter for 'James Milner Liverpool'... 'Liverpool will be linked with Pjanic, Hummels, Isco, Messi, Pele, Jesus, Jay Gatsby and John Lennon and end up signing Milner on a free.' 'Mancs are spending £30m on a squad player. Meanwhile Liverpool are trying to replace their best ever play SG with James Milner on a free.' 'Anyway I'm sure Liverpool fans will be buzzing when the club confirm James Milner has joined the club on a free. Memphis who?' 'James Milner on a free' is already the punchline of the summer; signing an England international midfielder with over 50 caps and two Premier League titles is clearly a booby prize. And 'on a free' too - which bizarrely makes it an even more embarrassing transfer. Would Liverpool be less of a laughing stock if they were paying £10m for a talented, experienced, versatile, dedicated footballer with an impeccable attitude? What's worse - getting last season's designer clothes a) at full, exorbitant price b) at a discount from TK Maxx or c) as a free gift? Liverpool fans were seemingly unembarrassed to pay £25m for Adam Lallana and £20m for Dejan Lovren last summer and yet paying nothing for Milner is dismissed by many as an unsavoury symptom of Liverpool's limited ambitions. For every LOL-tastic comment from a Manchester United fan and re-tweet-greedy 'joke' from a bookmakers' social media editor, there is an outburst of self-loathing from a Liverpool supporter already writing off next season by spitting out 'James Milner on a free'. But here's the real punchline: Getting James Milner on a free transfer would be an absolutely brilliant piece of business from Liverpool. It could be the Premier League transfer of the summer. Manuel Pellegrini is oft derided by journalists for never knowingly saying anything remotely quotable but this is the Chilean being atypically effusive: "Milner's a phenomenon, a guy with big balls and a heart this big. "Find me a more complete English player. There are players who're better technically, yes. Quicker players, yes. Players who head better, yes. But show me one who does all the things Milner does well. There isn't one." That is a Premier League-winning manager talking about a footballer he desperately wants to keep at Manchester City, a club with the means and ambition if not the mentality to dominate Europe. Pellegrini admitted to being "left with this feeling of injustice" every time he chooses Samir Nasri or Jesus Navas ahead of Milner, who has astonishingly played over 650 games for club and country at the age of just 29; at least 600 of those performances were worth a 7 or 8/10. And yet Milner is somehow not dynamic enough to play for a Liverpool side who have just finished fifth and desperately need players with exemplary decision-making and reliability to complement the exuberance and unreliability of youth. It may not be sexy to talk about consistency but nobody outside porn believes that large testicles are sexy. Looking at the statistics over 90 minutes, Milner has created fewer chances than his City colleagues Navas, David Silva and Nasri, but his record of 2.5 key passes is way ahead of anything Liverpool players have offered this season. Raheem Sterling (2.2), Steven Gerrard (2.1), Jordan Henderson (1.9) and Philippe Coutinho (1.8) are statistically less creative than Milner. He also makes almost three times as many tackles as Yaya Toure and significantly more than Henderson. Despite starting only 16 Premier League games this season, Milner's assists total (6) still matches Nasri and bizarrely beats Silva; he is behind only Sterling and Henderson from Liverpool's squad.
