Sub Sells U21s Down The River
Mediawatch can't help thinking the Mirror Sport sub has 'done a job' on England's Under-21s, giving the Young Lions a taste of the future.
Perched underneath a headline that reads 'Kane's Pain' and has no real relevance to the Tottenham striker other than he was part of the side that lost last night to Portugal, the sub-headline goes on: 'England's kids lose for FIFTH straight game in Euro finals despite Harry, Ings and Co...they now haven't won for SIX YEARS'.
Simon Bird does rediscover the context in his report, which concedes 'it was only the second defeat in 18 games of Southgate's reign...'
The emphasis on 'FIFTH' and 'SIX YEARS' is the eye catcher. But considering there are only three players remaining in the squad who featured in the three defeats at the last finals in 2013 - Jack Butland, Nathan Redmond and Nathaniel Chalobah - it's churlish at best to lump previous woes with Southgate's current crop.
Southgate was not the boss back then, so it's certainly harsh to attribute those three defeats as well as the final group defeat in 2011 to the current squad, who were undone 1-0 by a Portugal team who have been described as potentially the country's next 'golden generation'.
Unlike the England side fielded by Southgate, Rui Jorge was able to put out a side packed with senior international and Champions League experience.
'Where are Ross Barkley, Sterling and Shaw et al?', Mediawatch hears you cry.
Well after 24 minutes in the bore draw with Ireland and no action against Slovenia, Barkley is on the p*** in Ibiza, Sterling has been 'caught' doing nothing illegal and Shaw is "trying to get fit".
