Villan Of The Piece
So, Mediawatch assumes that we all know what Jack Grealish was allegedly up to while on holiday in Tenerife recently? Predictably, the number of high horses in the country has multiplied beyond belief in the aftermath, including over at BBC Sport.
'Sports stars behaving badly: Have they lost touch with reality?' is the beautifully oblivious headline from chief sports writer Tom Fordyce. 'Out of control, out of touch. Spoiled by success, intoxicated by money' is the opening line to a piece detailing how the images, allegedly of Aston Villa's Grealish, are symptomatic of sportspeople 'losing touch with reality'.
The article continues to run down similar instances, starting with 'occasional smoker of fags' Jack Wilshere initiating anti-Tottenham chants while apparently intoxicated. In what is actually meant to be a defence (of sorts) for Grealish, Fordyce states that 'none of this is particularly new - it's here where where we begin to take a rather ridiculous turn.
The next 'sports star behaving badly' is Manu Tuilagi, who lost his place in England's rugby World Cup squad after assaulting two female police officers. Among the rest are the three Leicester players allegedly appearing in a racist sex tape and tennis player Vitas Gerulaitis, 'a habitual cocaine user' at the top of his game.
Now, Mediawatch isn't saying that the alleged actions of Grealish are fine. As a footballer he is a role model, after all. However, as a 19-year-old, he is simply enjoying himself. Jumping from those antics to Wilshere's is one thing, but referencing a) a man who has assaulted two police officers and b) three players embroiled in controversy over a racist sex tape is a very big jump.
It's a piece where, as aforementioned, Fordyce is defending Grealish, albeit in the most deliberately roundabout way possible. One second he says that the midfielder is 'simply reflecting' reality (in an article titled 'Sports stars behaving badly: Have they lost touch with reality?', remember), and the next he's likening it to assaulting two police officers and to three players allegedly appearing in a racist sex tape.
'Be upset. Be disappointed. But do not be shocked', is the final line to the article. Frankly, we aren't.
